Everything You Need to Know About Winter Tires in Ontario

Winter Tires Newmarket from Simone Performance - Winter Tire Packages and Rebates on Sale and Discounts Aurora

The first snow has fallen, and many drivers are scrambling to get those winter tires put on. Whether you have a set of tires, or this year you need a new set, it’s important that you act now to ensure your safety on the snowy roads.

Many ask us if all-season tires are good enough for winter, and we typically say no and recommend actual winter tires. Winter tires are the safest option for Canadian winters, as they are designed specifically to get you through ice, snow, slush, and all the road conditions winter sends our way.

Here are some important things to look for when thinking about winter tires:

  1. You need all winter tires for them to work properly

There’s no skimping when it comes to winter tires. Regardless of what type of drive your vehicle has, you must have all four tires for your tires to keep you safe on the roads. If you only change two tires, there is still a risk of spinning out if you hit a slippery patch.

  1. Expensive does not mean better

The best tires aren’t always the most expensive, especially when it comes to winter tires. There are lots of good deals on quality winter tires that won’t break the bank but will keep you safe. Talk to us about your options and we’ll help you find the right ones for your budget.

  1. Get the right thread

It’s important that your winter tires have single-directional tread pattern with deep thread depth. This helps them maneuver in snow and ice. Winter tires have this thread and are made with special compounds that allow them to grip at low temperatures.

  1. Check your current tires to make sure they’re still good

As the temperature gets colder, the pressure in your tires will also get lower so it’s important to always keep an eye on your tire pressure. Having the right tire pressure is important all year round, but it’s especially important in the winter as the right air pressure ensures your tires can keep you safe on the roads. It also extends the thread life of your tire and improves fuel economy.

If you’re not sure how to check the tire pressure, talk to us at your next appointment, or swing by, and we’ll show you how.

  1. Replace old winter tires

Like any tires, it’s important to replace your winter tires when they get too worn. Once your winter tires’ tread gets down to 6/32nds of an inch, they’ve reached the end of their life. Remember, tread is what makes winter tires safe on winter roads, so replace your tires once the tread has worn too low.

  1. Get your winter tires insurance discount

In Ontario, you can save about 5% on your insurance premium if you have winter tires installed and you meet these requirements:

  • The insurant needs to have winter tires installed to apply
  • All 4 tires must be winter tires (all seasons do not count)
  • The insurant must show a winter tire certificate

Of course, every insurance policy is different but it’s worth calling your insurance company and asking.

Don’t skimp on safety

Purchasing winter tires is an investment in the safety of your vehicle, your family, and other people on the road. A good set of winter tires can last you years if taken care of properly. Simone Performance Announcement

April 25, 2022

After serving our community's automotive repair and performance needs for the past 18 years, with the last few stressful years during COVID, the time has come for us to move on to new adventures and to have a little more time to
relax and enjoy ourselves.

Vic and Christine are excited to announce that Simone Performance will be under new ownership as of May 1, 2022.

We want to thank our dedicated and talented staff who have been a very big part of our success, particularly Ryan Fray, our manager, for being that knowledgeable, friendly face customers see when they walked in.

Going forward, a familiar face will be your go-to guy at Simone Performance. Please welcome Brandon McCombe (our shop foreman) as the new owner, who – along with our great staff – will continue to provide the same excellent service that Simone Performance has become known for.

To help Brandon get established and on his way, Vic and Christine will be available in a limited capacity during the transition over the next few months. We cannot express our gratitude and appreciation enough for your business and to the Towns of Newmarket and Aurora – it has been a privilege to have been your trusted automotive shop for all these years.

THANK YOU!

Vic & Christine Simone
